Contemporary Fine Art Printmaker

artist statement

My work, in a small way, addresses issues which are to do with states of being and intimate interactions. I seek to articulate visually a ‘captured’ moment; a state of being; our present emotions and relationships, and the complexity of interactions, within ourselves and with others. It is humbling to consider these fragments of existence and their connections to a larger whole.

My work helps me explore issues on a personal, subjective, distinctly feminine level. I try to describe the multiplicity of self and the conclusion that these facets of ourselves and the external world’s perceptions and demands upon us co-exist simultaneously. And attempt to resolve the idea that we exist as a fluid web of interacting experiences, expectations and emotions.

The ‘Self’ borrows from ‘found’ cultural identities and histories and counterpoints this with ‘made’ contemporary realities. I therefore choose to collect and reflect on thoughts, writings, images and objects that belong to the ‘everyday’ experience of my life and others, in my journals.

The making of printing plates is an extension and evolution of my sketchbook imagery; I use the processes of collagraph, etching, dry point and monotype; my experiments with colour at the point of proofing create several unique prints before a small edition is produced.

My greatest wish is that the viewer can sense something compelling and powerful in my work, I am happy for that to be on a purely aesthetic level, and hope that the image as a ‘talisman’ touches another life.
