Majlis Suite
Inspired by several trips to the middle east and having an already sensititised fascination with ornament and colour, this suite of work considered the aesthetic of henna body decoration and the eastern ritual of preparing the bride for her wedding. The title of these works 'Laylat al Hinna' refer to the night of henna. The joy and celebration of the joining of a couple and the intense colours of their saris, flowers and jewellery is countered with the impending transitions and changes that must now challenge a state of being of before and after.
Using the drawn female form as a metaphor for an internal emotional landscape and embellishing it with the henna paste designs allowed the now abstracted forms to interact with each other as male and female might, and points of difference, transition and connections started to suggest themselves.
