‘A Series of Steps to do with Returning’

This statement, was inspired by ‘trophy’ moles hung on barbed wire; a reminder of our own mortality, and the paper shoes that are tied in trees in eastern religious rituals; a votive plea for fertility. Both these ideas are connected by the use of threads; the linear journey of our life.

The juxtaposing of the destruction and creation of death and birth, is a comment on the inevitable continuity of the ‘Self’ through a return to the earth and the raising of offspring.

The use of the ‘gestural’ for the moles and the ‘oriental’ for the shoes, hopefully indicates that both these images explore the paradox that death (as ending or change) is a beginning, and that life, if without spiritual awareness, can be a meaningless series of steps.
